There had been a week of spring sun in the run up to making this painting, but I began this image on a grey day and became interested in the contrast between layered greys and the gradual spread of fresh leaves. The trees in the foreground gradually took on a transparent quality when the emerging leaves began to fragment their previously stark silhouettes, dissolving the outline of bare branches.
