The intense heat during the summer of 2026 increased my awareness of shadow and shade. Like many people I sought it out whilst walking through the city. As this painting progressed, it became about the boundary between strong sunlight and shade, as well as the boundary between day and night: the blue beaded cord of the blue roller blind inadvertently demarcating the edge of an expanse of light, the white gull apparently pulling light forwards across city and planet.
