So pleased to be showing my drawing Recycling II in the SFSA Drawing Open 2023 exhibition.

The Private View takes place on Thursday 4th May, 18.00 - 20.30, at no format Gallery, Studio NF01, Casting House, Moulding Lane, Deptford, London, SE14 6BN

If you would like to join us at the Private View, please contact me for further details. We’d love to see you there!

The show will also be open:

5th - 7th May, 12.00 - 18.00
11th - 14th May, 12.00 - 18.00 (alongside SFSA Open Studios)

Recycling II is part of a larger series of drawings investigating the dynamic relationship between riverside, industrial and residential areas visible from my fifth floor studio within Westminster Industrial Estate, close to the Thames Barrier.  I'll be exhibiting the entire series in October (watch this space for further details...!).

2023 will be the fourth SFSA Drawing Open, always a vibrant and celebratory exhibition and we are looking forward to welcoming you to the no format Gallery.

The show is a true celebration of drawing and will include work by 100 artists.  The maximum size of each work is 30 x 30cm, so it's a fantastic opportunity to add a diverse range of small scale drawings to your collection.

Above: DETAIL from Recycling II, 2023, graphite on paper, 24 x 30 cm (framed dimensions), £250

As I drew Recycling II, I became aware of pairings of forms in the space beneath my studio window.  The two cylindrical waste crushers for example, which I drew at sequential stages of the crushing process.

Similarly, I enjoyed watching the standing figure.  I drew the figure twice, initially whilst they were standing in apparent contemplation of the crushing process and, the second time, as they turned and began walking away, as if having made a sudden decision.

These pairings of forms help with my aim of drawing the world ‘in progress’, so that the image becomes a record of the events taking place as I draw

I was also fascinated to see how working on a smaller scale both sharply focused my attention on the area of the recycling facility directly beneath my studio window and increased my awareness of the edges of the paper.

I was especially interested to see how this altered the sensation of movement in the drawing. The forklift truck's close proximity to the bottom right edge of the paper, for example, amplified the sensation of it being about to slip out of view, as it continues its seemingly never-ending task of moving waste from one area to another.
