Watercolour by Alexandra Blum trees losing their colour buildings growing sky darkening

Alexandra Blum, ‘Early Autumn’, watercolour on paper, 23 x 30.5 cm, 2025.

September and into October, the leaves darkening, the hill seemed to shrink in towards itself. It felt as though I were mentally travelling through the space as I worked, using each fragment of tree or building as a stepping stone to reach its neighbouring form, in turn mapping the ever-changing network of relationships between plant life and urban structures.
