I am very much looking forward to exhibiting five drawings in Drawn Together, a group exhibition at Paul Smith curated by David Remfry RA.

This exhibition invites six artists to explore human connection, gesture and form, set against the evolving backdrops of London and New York. I'm very excited to be showing drawings alongside work by: Güler Ates, Rita Barros, Katherine Jones RA, Bridget Moore and Abe Obedina.

When: The exhibition will be open Thursday 11th September until Sunday 9th November 2025, 11am - 7pm Monday - Saturday and 12pm - 6pm on Sundays.

Where: Paul Smith, 9 Albemarle Street, London, W1S 4BL

I hope you’ll drop in and see the show if you are in the area!

Winter on Laycock Green (detail above and whole image at very top) is part of a series of drawings made on location within a modest urban green in north London, observing the way it alters throughout the year.

I loved the juxtaposition of abundant plant and animal life with the surrounding density of urban infrastructure. Although winter was in full swing when I made this drawing, Laycock Green still teemed with life. I wanted the image to be an accumulation of the continual interactions between birds, mammals and plants which I caught glimpses of as I drew.

Aftermath (above) was drawn looking down onto the recycling plant beneath my fifth-floor studio window. It's part of a series of images examining the boundaries between interior and exterior, personal and public space and between human and more-than-human worlds.

I began the drawing just after a lorry load of paper offcuts had been tipped into the recycling skips beneath my studio window, and was fascinated by the way the area subsequently became alive with people picking up escaped slivers of paper….

The insect on the windowsill, drawn twice as it meandered around the ledge, felt like a pivot in the drawing, marking the point of transition between exterior world and my hand, drawing on the interior, studio side of the window.

When observed very closely the complex forms of the factory appeared almost fantastical...

....I wanted to record the juxtaposition of river and factory and the way in which at high tide the river becomes busy with barges taking aggregate up river and waste down river...

...the vertical lines in the foreground describe my open studio window, with the handle in the position I had left it in, when opening it a few moments before it became part of the image.

I also love the way I see birds flying at close quarters from my studio window. Whilst drawing Tower (above) I noticed a pigeon instinctively twist its body in flight as it skimmed past my window. Later, a seed head floated through the same spot, its gentle drifting fall countering the determined directional flight of the bird. The tower in the background is a brick chimney, part of a complex of historic warehouses and factories. My eye is often drawn to it, even though it’s beginning to be overshadowed by tower blocks being built to its right.

I very much hope you'll drop in to the show to see these drawings in person.
