Alexandra Blum, ‘Autumn transition’, watercolour on paper, 23 x 30.5 cm, 2025.
Autumn proceeded more slowly than I expected, and this image charts the gradual transition in colour through November and into December, when the intricate structure of bare branches became visible once more (top right). I was very interested to see how the change from depicting chlorophyll laden greens, to the reds and ochres of autumn and the muted greys of winter, also reveals the path my eye took whilst visually travelling through the landscape, gradually recording the colour changes at each stage of the journey. In this way time becomes embedded in the image.
