Graphite drawing by Alexandra Blum autumn leaves dogs playing layered space Laycock Green London

Alexandra Blum, ‘Monumental Autumn’, graphite on paper, 29.7 x 42 cm, 2021

The autumn leaves were deep by the time I drew this. Each leaf fell so delicately, but spending several days amongst the trees as they gradually shed every leaf, helped me feel the monumentality of autumn.

Dogs looked as if they loved it too. They often seemed confused by me though…. One dog walker told me (after his dog had been standing stock still staring at me for what felt like an age) that, because I didn’t have a dog with me, his dog didn’t understand why I was there!
