Alexandra Blum graphite drawing leafy tree Laycock Green London

Alexandra Blum, ‘Abundant Leaves’, graphite on paper, 29.7 x 42 cm, 2022

I drew underneath the tree in this image for several weeks during spring, which had given me the feeling of being ‘within’ the tree. As early summer arrived I wanted to look back at the same tree and draw it from the ‘outside’.

There’s so much energy within a mass of leaves and I was fascinated to see that, every so often, individual leaves swung like pendulums on their stalks.

The surrounding undergrowth was also expanding in every direction, attracting passers-by to paths which had become secretive, unlike their bare, exposed winter form.
