Graphite drawing by Alexandra Blum early spring on Laycock Green new buds birds passersby

Alexandra Blum, ‘Early Spring’ , graphite on paper, 29.7 x 42 cm

So joyful to observe spring in action and such a privilege to spend time drawing the phenomenal pace of spring change on Laycock Green. So much happens so quickly, I had to speed up my drawing process in an attempt to keep up….

This image was drawn in March, as the first leaves were beginning to emerge. It felt as though each branch, twig, bud and leaf was reaching out, feeling its way into its surroundings.

It’s also a compilation of viewpoints. I moved backwards and forwards so that I could draw the whole tree as well as individual buds and leaves on its upper branches.
